RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS AND INFLUENZA

IN SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, MÉXICO

Since 2002, in the Microbiology Department (Facultad de Medicina, UASLP) we have studied the epidemiology of viral respiratory infections. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza are leading causes of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) worldwide. However, the epidemiology of these viruses in Mexico has not been completely characterized. Between 2002 and 2010, the number of ARIs-associated medical encounters in the State of San Luis Potosí showed a seasonal pattern in which Winter epidemics were associated to circulation of RSV and influenza virus. Of note, during the Spring of 2009 a significant increase in ARIs was recorded in association with the emergence of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, followed by a second wave during the Fall of the same year.
